Sensational Jarag Finds Home with L.E.D

New halogen pixel FX already in use on Brits and London Fashion Week
One of the first lighting sensations of 2009 has been the Jarag-5 halogen array, from French company Chromlech.

After being specified for use on both The Brits with U2 (where the set was lit by experienced LD Al Gurdon) and a London Fashion Week event (by board operator, Tupac Martir), Chromlech have now appointed Lighting Effects Distribution as their official UK distributor.

Said L.E.D managing director, Ian Kirby: "We are delighted to be handling this ingenious product, which represents a classic blend between retro and new technology. It is a versatile and high-impact pixelated wall ideal for touring and television, and already attracting considerable interest." Containing 25 x 75W halogen lamps (outputting over 1800W) in a 580mm square aluminium frame, the Jarag-5 comes in two versions - the PAR30, E27 version with aluminium reflector offering 10 beam spread and PAR20 GU10 version, providing 25 beam spread.

The new lights received their first UK exposure at last September's PLASA Show where they attracted the attention of people like Gurdon and Siyan's Bryan Leitch (who immediately purchased 16).

"We first came across the Jarag-5 last summer - ironically at an ArKaos training day," said Kirby. "What I immediately liked was that each lamp is individually controllable with its own inbuilt dimmer to produce pixel effects." This is one of several modes in which Jarag-5 can be controlled. Aside from being run via its own internal sequencer it can be managed via a third party DMX matrix controller or media server (such as the ArKaos). The built-in sequencer will control individual lamps in either six-channel, 25-channel or 31-channel (25 + 6) configurations. The six DMX channels handle intensity, speed, effects/fade, rotation/symmetry, sequence selection, but the internal sequencer also manages up to 256 sequences of 32 steps - 128 factory programmed and a further 128 sequences available to the user. The Jarag-5 produces a range of shades from amber to white, with intensity of effects ranging from fast flash to soft, slow transitions.

By combining several Jarag-5 arrays walls of light can be created to display videos, patterns or animated text. No additional dimmers are required - just a direct supply and a DMX cable.

Patterns and animations can be programmed into the system and video can be sent from advanced DMX consoles or media servers. "Jarag-5 offers the LD another option in his colour palette," says Ian Kirby. "We predict a huge take-up for this - not only in the television world but also in the live sector, with rental companies already taking a keen interest."
